What Does Tantra Really Mean?
Tantra is a centuries-old Indian tradition; the Sanskrit word means something close to «weave» or «expansion» – and refers to the connection between body, mind and energy.
The root «tan» means to expand and to weave in Sanskrit. Tantric currents developed within the Hindu and Buddhist traditions of India; their scriptures – the Tantras – reach back to the second half of the first millennium. Their central idea was radical for its time: the body is not an obstacle on the path to awareness and connection, but a part of that path. Ritual, breath and conscious work with energy have belonged to it from the very beginning.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Western movements took up these ideas and combined them with modern bodywork and humanistic psychology – what became known as Neo-Tantra. Over the decades that followed, the modern Tantra massage grew out of this: a Western form of massage that combines Tantric principles such as slowness, presence and the inclusion of the whole body with massage technique.
Because this development has taken so many directions, «Tantra» today stands for very different things: from strictly non-erotic, spiritually oriented bodywork through to nothing more than an advertising label on a conventional erotic service.
